In December of 2019, five passionate volunteers – selected from more than 140,000 applicants – got to experience the vast beauty of the Great White Continent first hand, as part of the Antarctic Sabbatical. Their mission? To assist British environmental scientist Kirstie Jones-Williams with her ground-breaking research into microplastics – and their potential pollution of Earth’s last great wilderness. During their visit, the Airbnb volunteers collected multiple snow samples from remote sites, as well as helping Jones-Williams process and analyze them in her Antarctic lab.
The Antarctic Sabbatical
The Antarctic Sabbatical was an opportunity for five ‘citizen scientists’ to travel to Antarctica and conduct research on microplastics. These short films follow the five volunteers and their leader, plastics scientist Kirstie Jones-Williams, as they study, train, research, and explore the highest, driest continent on Earth.
